Bruce Flanders Ugly Hawaiian Shirt Night
June 28, 2025 - Industry Hills Speedway

Bruce Flanders, Ugly Hawaiian Shirt Night 7/28/25 By Howie Zechner

Extremely popular as it involves spectator participation and is named after one of Americas best know, respected and popular race announcers the Annual, Bruce Flanders Ugly Hawaiian Shirt night means filled grandstands and cheers of delight. Named in his honor years before he passed for Bruce Flanders this was a labor of love so the Trailblazer, Hall of Fame recipient nurtured the event.

As always, a contest is held on who had the ugliest. Judges had a hard time deciding cause spectators, riders and staff came with the most beautiful ugly Hawaiian Shirts on the planet.

No question that it was a night of much merriment but ugly was only the B-Side as Speedway Motorcycle racing is the draw that brings the masses. They come to the Thunderdome to see their favorite two-wheel gladiators race high horsepower, lightweight, 500cc four stroke, brakeless machines around a small 1/8-mile dirt oval.

Fans were not disappointed as all the best slide pilots were there. Current AMA National Champion Broc Nicol, Three-time AMA National Champion Max Ruml, Two-time Outlaw East Coast National Champion Austin Novratil, 2024 AMA California State Champion Slater Lightcap, Two-time AMA Under 21 Champion Alex Martin, 2020 AMA 250cc Champion Wilbur Hancock along with half a dozen more who could and have won and should never be counted out.

Fact is there are no easy Division One racers. Each rider had to pay their dues in time, crashes, injuries and dedication.

This night saw “The Cowboy” Levi Leutz get the Division 1 nod. The 2022 AMA 250cc and 2019 AMA 150cc Long Track Champion who just turned 16 had been struggling. Getting though Division 3, then Division 2 was a chore that took more than a month. Rocket time as for many it takes years but Division 1 made Levi feel like a rookie. Now here he was racing against the best in the business.

Suddenly Levi Leutz went from rags to riches. Two seconds and a third in the heat races and then a second in the Semi put him in the Main Event. Up against Nicol, Martin and Lightcap he came in last. That however was outstanding as this was his first ever Division Main. The Main Event finish was Broc Nicol, Slater Lightcap, Alex Martin, Levi Leutz.

Of course, this is racing and just as Lady Luck gave Leutz some love her partner Murphy put the screws to Wilbur Hancock when in Heat 1 the son of four-time World Speedway Champion Greg Hancock slid out in turn two. In extreme pain with a dislocated shoulder in layman’s terms that means the upper arm bone (humerus is forced out of the shoulder blade socket (scapula). I’ve seen most every injury over the years and witnessed more than my share of ambulance rides but the Wilbur fix had me talking to myself.

Referee Steve Lucero, promoter Kelly Inman and track nurse Heather O’Darrow laid him flat on his back and literally forced the joint back into the shoulder socket. Once done Wilbur walked off the track under his own power. I visited with him after the race night was completed. He was still sore but had good arm motion. When I saw Wilbur again at our next race meet, he was 100% and on the program.

So, there’s the short on another spectacular night of non-stop Speedway action.

Industry Hills Expo Center will host another six race meets this 2025 season with the next being Legends and Heroes Night on July 26, followed by the AMA National Champion Series Round 1 on August 2 and Round 2 on August 9.

Costa Mesa Speedway will resume racing on September 13. For more information on either track look them up at their website.
